When designing a web site, a great idea to make the design unique is to use elements from real life, such as nature, instead of going for the standard "Web 2.0" style. That will make your web site stand out, and when done properly, can look great.
A good example is Go Glamping. They use trees in the header, and a wood texture for the background, which give the site a great feeling.
If you are starting a new project but have no idea what color scheme to use in your design, a great place to find inspiration is COLORlovers where you can find colors, color pallets and patterns.
Another great place to go for color inspiration is Adobe Kuler, Adobe's very own color theme site.

Type, the proper illustration, nothing else. Absolute winner. I think their work is cool because they serve a lot of motion graphic agencies and it's the work of the latter what must be showcased. It would be silly if they designed a full blown illustrated site. That can work perfectly for personal portfolios but in this case the work of their clients is what really matters.
All the best!
